more weeks of my mission. And can you believe it's already Monday
again. Wow wow wow wow. Okay.
BIG NEWS: We have this solid amazing adorable investigator named Emma.
She's YSA age and is already best friends with one of our cute members
who she met this week. Emma came with us to the Elders baptism on
Wednesday and LOVED it and even went with our member, Eve, to
institute after and stayed for the activity after. WE ARE SO EXCITED
ABOUT HER. She also came to all 3 hours of church and LOVED it. She
has more friends in the ward then I do. I'm actually not even
exaggerating lol. So she's going to institute again this week thanks
to the members. Yayyyy.
Also, we were over at a member's house on Saturday and he's the kind
of guy that knows everything about everything. The missionaries would
use their tea hour on Sundays to go to his house and just ask him
doctrinal questions and he could answer any one of them.
So went to his house to do family history with a recent convert and
while we were there he asked us if we had any questions. Somehow we
got on to the subject of Adam and Eve and he said that other religions
will tell you about "original sin" and that Adam and Eve were the
first sinners because they disobeyed God and ate the fruit. However
that's not true because Adam and Eve didn't even know how to sin
before they ate the fruit because they were innocent. They didn't even
know what sinning was! But they were smart and knew they needed to
transgress (go beyond the limits of) the law to fulfil both
Then he asked us, "When did the first sin happen?" He told us to turn
to Moses 5 verse 12. It reads: "And Adam and Eve blessed the name of
God, and they made all things known unto their sons and their
daughters." So, Adam and Eve taught their children everything and made
all things known unto them so they could use their agency and choose
right from wrong.
The next verse reads: "And Satan came among them, saying: I am also a
son of God; and he commanded them, saying: Believe it not; and they
believed it not, and they loved Satan more than God. And men began
from that time forth to be carnal, sensual, and devilish."
So the first sin happened when the children of Adam and Eve started to
doubt. It's amazing how powerful doubt is. And I think sometimes when
people start having questions about the gospel they fall into this "I
can't find the answer so I'm just going to believe it's not true" kind
of attitude. Which isn't the kind of attitude that gets us anywhere
and we can even feel ourselves taking steps back.
The gospel is like a jigsaw puzzle. When we're baptised we get all the
end pieces put together. We've got this nice frame of knowledge of the
Restoration, Plan of Salvation, Gospel of Jesus Christ, etc, etc. Now
it's the middle bits we need to work on and every puzzle piece is a
question. It's so easy to pick up a piece and think "well I have no
idea where this fits (cause it's probably a piece of grass or
something) and I don't know what to do with it" and sometimes we just
have to wait, set it aside, work on some other places, and come back
to it later once we have a better picture.
President Spencer W. Kimball was once asked by a stake president,
"President, do you ever have any questions?" President Kimball
answered, "All the time! I've got a whole notebook in my pocket full
of questions." The stake president asked, "so what do you do with
those questions?" He answered, "I write them down and then once I've
learned a little more doctrine and gained some more knowledge, I see
where it fits and it's no longer a mystery anymore."
If we are too easy to doubt, like the children of Adam and Eve, our
questions will never get answered. Just like President Monson said,
"Remember that faith and doubt cannot exist in the same mind at the
same time, for one will dispel the other."
So don't doubt! And keep asking questions. But don't just stop there,
go and find some answers.
